Thank you so much for your interest in my dayhab. Here's a little about me and how I got here...
I am mom to five children, three "grown and gone", as I say. Happy, organized chaos feels like home. :-)
I graduated from the University of Mary-Hardin Baylor with a BS in Technology and Training. From there I dabbled in website design and soon started a computer software company specializing in children's educational cds. For 15 years I rode that wave until downloads took over.
Following my heart for a love of music, I became a professional musician and traveled with a country/gospel band singing and playing guitar and saxophone for eight years. I was fortunate enough to contribute to five cds, write 29 originals and play in venues like Nashville, Branson, Grand Ole Opry radio, appear on a couple of television shows and even perform on Carnival Cruise Lines. One of my favorite memories is having the privilege to sing on base for our troops four or five times each year.
From there I went into the IT field for a couple of years...I can be a nerd. Next, I worked in individualized homecare for patients on hospice. That was quite a heatwarmning and sometimes heartbreaking experience, but I'm thankful for the opportunity as that was the path that eventually led me to working with adults with IDD. Yay!
I opened my business, Respite Haus, in February 2021 in New Braunfels. Recently, a family challenge positioned me here in Georgetown and I am really excited about opening my dayhab in this area! I very much enjoy working with the special needs clients that I am blessed to call my friends.
God has always been a driving force in my life and I sincerely feel led to this area. There's no doubt my fondness for the special community began early on, as my mom was a bus driver and I would ride her route some days in awe of the relationship she had with her passengers. I quickly overcame my fear of the unknown and found that they seemed to possess a certain quality that we all desire...the ability to love unconditionally.
From my perspective, the special needs population just wants to be perceived as you and I...normal (if there is such a thing). So, my mission has been to treat my friends the way I like to be treated. In my observation, they're gratified through helping others in the community and giving back, as well as something as simple as just being involved in daily tasks.
I genuinely want to make a difference in the lives of the people I'm around. I enjoy helping delight in life via activities we all take for granted....volunteering locally, learning life skills, exercising, interacting through games, sharing of faith with like-minded individuals or just having fun!
I've always heard that it's best to find something you love and do it, then work doesn't feel like work at all. I am truly blessed to be able to do just that.
